Sažetak

The aim of this paper is to provide an outline of the way in which English was taught online during the first epidemic wave of COVID-19 in Serbia between March and June 2020.

We will start with the hypothesis that the COVID-19 epidemic, which was officially announced on March 15th in Serbia, brought major changes in teaching all subjects at all levels, including ELT.

The research is based on a survey conducted online. We gathered responses from 119 English teachers who work in state-run schools, language schools or as private tutors.

The results show that the majority of the teachers used free platforms, that they had technical issues and that they have divided positions on the potential of online teaching in terms of developing particular language skills, grading and progress assessment.

However, the teachers agree that classroom teaching is the preferred way of teaching, that combining classroom and online teaching is a viable option, and that online teaching is not something they would opt for unless it was absolutely necessary.
